One of the best ways to build your own successful life and achieve the goals you have set for yourself is to emulate what other successful people do, and emulate what has worked for them over the years.

If you listen carefully to how they talk about their lives, you will start to notice the commonalities that many of them share.

Most successful people have similar practices and strategies that they have introduced into their daily lives.

There is a lot that can be said on this subject, but today we are going to look at a very common key to success: Establishing a morning routine or morning success ritual.

An effective morning routine is more than just brewing some gourmet coffee and doing a couple of deep-knee bends; a routine is the foundation of your day and it sets the tone for how your day will unfold.

It may not seem like much at first glance, but trust me, it is powerful.

Why Morning Routines Boost Productivity

If you have a pre-planned morning routine, you’ll have some structure for organizing your energy so that you don’t get lost in whims and distractions.

If you have taken the time to identify and schedule your tasks the night before, you will know exactly what it is you should be doing when you first start your day.

This takes away the guesswork while you are waiting for the caffeine to kick in, and lets you make use of that highly-productive morning energy.

You may have heard the line, “Eat the frog first.”

This comes from a Mark Twain expression, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

Essentially, this means to tackle the hardest and most important job first and foremost. After completing the hardest task, everything else will seem easier for you, in comparison.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset Every Morning

A powerful morning routine is more than simply organizing your to-do list.

It is a chance to build the kind of mindset that will keep you focused, motivated and positive throughout each and every day.

Remember those successful people and what they do? That’s right, they take the time to get in touch with themselves and put their mind in high-gear.

So, spend the time to communicate with yourself in a way that will get your juices flowing and excited to take on the day.

Some high-achievers will go over their goals and tune in to what it is they want to complete that day.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, looked in the mirror every morning, and asked himself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

Personal development author and speaker, Anthony Robbins, suggests that you set up an “Hour of Power,” “30 Minutes to Thrive,” or at least “Fifteen Minutes to Fulfillment,” and spend the time visualizing what you are grateful for and what you want to bring into your life.

Other people will coach themselves to remember the protocols they have set to help them overcome procrastination and stay on track.

Whatever it is you decide to do, remember that the goal is to put your mindset in a focused, energized and positive state.

Your best work will come from this place.

Your Morning Routine is Part of Your Success Strategy

There are other very important elements to consider when crafting your morning routine, from exercise to hydration, but establishing your mindset is certainly one practice that I recommend you spend some time developing.

Success is a long-term effort, and strategies like this will help keep you on the path and will even speed up your progress.

To start, I recommend you take some time to think it through and write out what it is you want to do each morning.

After a while, it will become a natural extension of waking up and you won’t imagine any other way.

I hope this tip helps you boost your action-taking efforts. For those of you already practicing a morning routine, I’d like to hear what you find works best for you. What do you do during your morning success routine? Let me know in the comment section below.

  1. I love this article Nigel. I can get the importance of a structured morning routine. I am stuggling with this right now. You see during the school year I have a routine which includes working out first thing in the morning and getting the kids off to school. Now that the kids are off for the summer, my routine is shot. It changes day by day. I find it takes me a bit to get back into a groove with things. It is not unmanagable but I definately take a performance every year during this time.

    1. I’m glad you liked the article, Marcus. Yes, now that your kids are home and your schedule is different, I can see that it would be more challenging to maintain the old routine! I’m sure you’re already working on this but a shorter routine or an adjusted morning routine might work. If you can’t finish your usual routine items in the morning, then scheduling them in the calendar for later in the day is another option. Hope you have success with this and let me know how things go!
